What are chakras?

Chakras are wheels of light which act as gateways to the physical body.  They are traditionally depicted as lotus flowers, each resonating at different frequencies, corresponding to the colours of the rainbow.

"As the colour rays densify and descend down through our earth's atmosphere, they at last arrive in our own energy field, known as subtle bodies, the substance of our aura.  These subtle layers act as antennae that receive all energies around us, recording some, and rejecting others.  They store different levels of memory-consciousness and pass the information on to the chakras." (Fabien Maman)

The chakra system takes a complete view of human experience, integrating the many layers that make up the self - the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

Although the humain energy system is said to have many chakras, the traditional Hindu system names 7 major ones.  Each chakra operates at a unique, optimum frequency, which determines its colour and its other characteristics.

A chakra is a center of activity that receives, assimilates, and expresses life force energy.

Chakras healing is based on the belief that in order for total well-being to take place, we must act as an integrated whole.  When there is a dysfunction or blockage in one part of the system, it has an impact on all the other parts.  This malfunctioning can occur when the energy flowing through the chakras is either excessive or deficient.

A smooth, steady flow of energy through the chakra system ensures a healthy aura (bio-electromagnetic or vibrating energy field around the human body), in turn indicating a body clear from dis-ease.

To each energy centre corresponds a note.  Most healing systems use the chromatic scale as per adjacent picture.

Fabien Maman, however, created the 'Cycle of Fifths' healing method to empower and energise the chakras.
He found that he needed a different combination of notes to concentrate and ground their energy. www.tama-do.com

The seven major chakras at the midline of the body connect with our physical organs and systems as well as our emotions, family, past lives and our beliefs.

Each chakra corresponds to a different area of the body and an aspect of the psyche. Physical and psychological problems are thought to show up in a person’s chakras and energy field long before symptoms are noticeable.

"Chakras process the colour light into energy messages that the physical body can receive.  Their energetic content will be transmitted at last to the organic structure of the body via the endocrine glands and nervous system, acupuncture meridians, organs and finally into the cellylar memory and DNA level." (Fabien Maman)

Chakras are shown to have very close proximity with the hormonal glands responsible for secreting hormones so essential to keep the vital body functions running in a smooth way.  These are the associations:

  • The root chakra and the testes responsible for producing sperm (spermatozoa) male sex hormones including testosterone in the male body

  • The sacral chakra and the ovaries responsible for producing ovum in the female body

  • The solar plexus chakra and the pancreas plus adrenal glands responsible for producing insulin, glucagon, and somatostatin plus adrenaline respectively.

  • The heart chakra and the thymus gland responsible for producing T cell repertoire

  • The throat chakra and the thyroid gland responsible for producing thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3)

  • The third eye chakra and the pineal gland responsible for producing melatonin

  • The crown chakra and the pituitary gland responsible for producing oxytocin, antidiuretic hormone and melanocyte-stimulating hormone
